What The Fellas Say

This special tasting box of four 200ml bottles takes you on a four-decade tour of Barão de Vilar’s tawny port wines from 10 year aged through 40 year aged.

What The Sommelier Says

10 yr: brick colour with amber edge. Elegant nose of dried fruits, coffee, caramel, black fruits, chocolate and spicy oak. Silky body, with long, memorable finish. 20 yr: deep amber with golden brown edge. Voluptuous nose of jam, nuts, orange blossom and spicy wood. Rich body full of dried fruits, salted caramel, honey and vanilla. Long, smooth finish. 30 yr: golden with greenish-brown edge. Opulent nose of dried figs, nuts, honey. Silky, rich body with dried fruits under layers of caramel and salted caramel. Long, memorable finish. 40 yr: golden amber with lush olive edge. Extremely complex, powerful nose of dried fruits, honey and spices. On the mouth, roasted coffee, Ras el Hanout, caramel and chocolate. The finish is pure magic.

Pairs well with…

The proper enjoyment of this special box will require the following: some dried fruits and dark chocolate or strong blue cheese (for the 10 yr); foie gras or crême caramel (for the 20 yr); a chocolate decadence cake (for the 30 yr); roast quince with a Romeo y Julieta cigar (for the 40 yr).

About The Winemakers

They called it “Nature” but they could call it “Naked”. Its like a dew-draped dryad dancing in an ancient oak forest, horny satyrs prancing among the magic mushrooms. It’s the purest essence of Alvarinho. Its crisp and bright and deep and sexy, and it lingers on the palate with ripples of citrus and stone and a tantalising tease of honeysuckle.

Region: Douro

Region: Douro

The wines of the Douro Valley are known for their depth, complexity, and aging potential. The soil is predominantly schist, a type of metamorphic rock that retains heat and helps to ripen the grapes. The region’s unique terroir, combined with the use of indigenous grape varieties and traditional winemaking techniques, create wines that are rich, complex, and full of character.
