The Insider - July 2025

Hello to summer. Hello to hot afternoons at the beach. Hello to ice cubes and summer dresses. Hello to flip flops, tennis whites and fat bumblebees. Most of all, hello to crisp, cool rosé, refreshing white wine and bbq-friendly red wine.

As always, wine descriptions below, and if you run out, you can order more from The Cellar.

Don’t forget, you can look up past boxes in The Archive.

Casa do Barrosso, Rosé

[grape/vintage] Padeiro do Basto / 2022
[region] Vinho Verde

Like an amuse-bouche of the lightest of cherry sorbets drizzled with a thin thread of rasberry coulis. Refreshing and lively and balanced, but with a hint of something earthy and timeless from this old Portuguese Padeiro grape.

Pairs well with a watermelon and feta salad, a fresh grilled tuna steak, a chicken picatta, shrimp pasta or a simple risotto with a twist of lemon.

Check it out in The Cellar.

Filantropo, Encruzado

[grape/vintage] Filantropo /2022

[region] Dão

A fat farmer lies sleeping in the long grass under blossoming apple and lemon trees. The air buzzes wth honey bees and lazy flies. A cool mountain stream tumbles over river rocks at the edge of the orchard, teasing the air with its freshness and tickling the wild flowers along its banks. The farmer wakes, stirs and sighs deeply. What dreams did he wake from to return to this Arcadian idyll?

Pairs well with a beachside grilled seabass, a buttery lobster or roast quail, a Venetian “risi e bisi” risotto, or a pungent soft goat cheese.

Check it out in The Cellar.

Quinta do Carvalhido, Tinto

(grape/vintage) Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca / 2020
[region] Douro

Like taking a bite of the smoothest, darkest flourless chocolate torte while standing in tree pose – pure concentration and balance and poise smothered in richness. And like some ancient yogi on a mountain top these vines have absorbed the schist and granite soil of their terroir and soaked up the hot, high altitude sunshine of Douro Superior, and packaged it up into a glass of perfect wisdom.

Pairs well with a tender rack of lamb with black currant glaze, grilled steak on the bbq, or a dark chocolate flourless cake.

Check it out in The Cellar.
