What The Fellas Say

Like taking a bite of the smoothest, darkest flourless chocolate torte while standing in tree pose – pure concentration and balance and poise smothered in richness. And like some ancient yogi on a mountain top these vines have absorbed the schist and granite soil of their terroir and soaked up the hot, high altitude sunshine of Douro Superior, and packaged up into a glass of perfect wisdom.

What The Sommelier Says

Ruby colour with dark purple undertones and hints of purple around the edges. Deliciously heady aroma of plum, blueberry, cassis and vanilla with notes of forest flowers and a finish of cocoa. On the palate, it is full bodied and well-balanced with good acidity and mature tannins.

Pairs well with…

…a tender rack of lamb with black currant glaze, grilled steak on the bbq, or a dark chocolate flourless cake.

About The Winemakers

Quinta do Carvalhido dates back several centuries and historically has produced grapes for the Port industry. In 2013, the Drummond Borges family, descendants of the Viscounts of Barcel, began the project of restoring and reinvigorating the estate as a producer of quality Douro wines in a socially, environmentally and economically sustainable way. Overlooking the River Tua in Douro Superior, the estate enjoys a continental climate with four well-defined seasons and significant thermal variation. Combined with the classic schist and granite soils of the region, Q. do Carvalhido’s wines are complex and full of character.

Region: Douro

The wines of the Douro Valley are known for their depth, complexity, and aging potential. The soil is predominantly schist, a type of metamorphic rock that retains heat and helps to ripen the grapes. The region’s unique terroir, combined with the use of indigenous grape varieties and traditional winemaking techniques, create wines that are rich, complex, and full of character.
