What The Fellas Say

Take a trip down memory lane with this crisp and complex table wine, to a time before sanitised, algorithmic taste profiles. José Mota Capitão’s entry-level white wine is full of lemon rind and melon and chalky soils and dusty adegas. It’s “interesting” in all the right ways – fun and funky and like someone you’d want to drink with late into the night on the terrace of an old farm house listening to crickets singing to the stars.

What The Sommelier Says

A clear yellow wine with citrus and mineral aromas, joined by orange blossom and white-fleshed fruit such as apple and pear. On the palate it shows fresh, balanced acidity with citrus, orchard fruit and a mineral edge. The finish is long, persistent and very fresh.

Pairs well with…

…a fresh grilled sea bass on an outdoor charcoal fire, a plate of soft cheeses with dried fruits or a loaded sushi platter.

About The Winemakers

Herdade do Portocarro, near the village of São Romão about 30 minutes south of Lisbon, lies along the Sado River on the edge of the Atlantic ocean. It’s vines are heated by Alentejo sun and cooled by Atlantic mists. Winemaker José Mota Capitão dedicated himself to reviving the region’s ancient winemaking traditions that faded after World War II. His passion for old-style wines – less fruit, less sweetness, more layers, more character – gives the Portocarro collection a unique and exciting profile.

Region: Setúbal

Region: Setúbal

The Setúbal region is thought to be the home of the first grape vines ever planted on the Iberian Peninsula (c 2000 BCE). Today, the region’s wines range from the sweet, floral Moscatel from the Serra da Arrábida, to the sublime reds of a well-structured Palmela. With fresh, coastal breezes and hot summers, the region offers some exquisite tasting experiences. The red wines of “Palmela” are based on the Castelão grape variety that offers its best in the warm and loose sandy soils of Palmela, gaining a complexity and depth that the variety can only rarely achieve outside the region. The two dominant white grape varieties are Arinto and Fernão Pires, as well as Moscatel Graúdo, which is used mainly in the region’s fortified wines.
