What The Fellas Say

Sip and you’re gone—mid-18th century, midnight in a stone manor high in the Douro. Candles gutter in iron sconces. The great dining hall is cleared, chairs pushed aside, silver goblets toppled. Two men face each other, swords drawn, boots grinding on old flagstones. The air is thick with cherry and blackberry, oak smoke curling from the hearth, a sweet trace of chocolate and vanilla rising like perfume from the overturned decanter. Ladies gasp from the gallery, lace sleeves trembling as steel rings on steel. Honour is at stake. Tonight, blood will spill—dark and warm, mixing with the wine that bears this noble house’s name. Structured, powerful, and unforgettable—this is the Douro at full tilt, a wine with history in its veins.

What The Sommelier Says

Deep red color. On the nose, aromas of velvety black fruits. On the palate, the black fruits stand out, but in perfect harmony with notes of wood and syrupy tannins, revealing a profile full of character with a long, elegant finish.

Pairs well with…

…red meats and game, like a veal steak in a Port wine sauce or lamb chops with those succulent bones almost caramalised.

About The Winemakers

The Van Zeller family’s history is part of the history of the Port wine trade, a business to which the family has been linked for over 400 years and uninterruptedly for 15 generations. The Barão de Vilar title was bestowed by D. Maria II in 1836, in favour of Cristiano Nicolau Kopke, ancestor, by marriage, of the Van Zeller family. In 2008, under the guidance of the 14th generation of the longest family wine lineage in Portugal, the name was revived and re-dedicated to the trade and production of wines, serving as the embodiment of the expertise and experience accumulated over the course of several centuries. A tribute to Douro Superior, Barão de Vilar combines the oenological tradition of Port with the ageing potential of still wines. The result is lively nectars with plenty of life and character.

Region: Douro

Region: Douro

The wines of the Douro Valley are known for their depth, complexity, and aging potential. The soil is predominantly schist, a type of metamorphic rock that retains heat and helps to ripen the grapes. The region’s unique terroir, combined with the use of indigenous grape varieties and traditional winemaking techniques, create wines that are rich, complex, and full of character.
