About The Winemakers
The Van Zeller family’s history is part of the history of the Port wine trade, a business to which the family has been linked for over 400 years and uninterruptedly for 15 generations. The Barão de Vilar title was bestowed by D. Maria II in 1836, in favour of Cristiano Nicolau Kopke, ancestor, by marriage, of the Van Zeller family. In 2008, under the guidance of the 14th generation of the longest family wine lineage in Portugal, the name was revived and re-dedicated to the trade and production of wines, serving as the embodiment of the expertise and experience accumulated over the course of several centuries. A tribute to Douro Superior, Barão de Vilar combines the oenological tradition of Port with the ageing potential of still wines. The result is lively nectars with plenty of life and character.
